A Natural Campus

Several areas on campus the grounds crew have left to grow wild. They are interspersed between areas of cut lawns and other maintained grass areas. As we drive from our apartment to our student homes, we get to enjoy the beauty and changes that occur to these areas. Today we finally captured one section we drive by regularly:

The wildflowers and other foliage have been striking. It's mid-July and there is none of the brown grasses we are accustomed to in the west.

A Unapproved "Pet"

A number of weeks ago I pulled a pan out to make some dinner and found a little surprise in it. I showed it to Dan saying, "Please tell me that isn't a mouse dropping." We cleaned the pan out well and then kept our eyes open to try and discover if we did have a mouse or not.

Several weeks went by with no sightings so I thought we were in the clear. (Thought being the key word in the sentence...)

One of the houseparents we cover for gave us some Ghirardelli chocolates as a "Thank You" for helping with their students. Knowing Dan as I do, I hid the chocolates in a dresser drawer to ration and divide evenly between us.

Shortly after that I was getting into that drawer and noticed a little mess:

 

I was afraid of what the mess meant...sure enough when I moved the chocolate package I discovered the proof...

...we had an unwelcome guest in our home.

Some time earlier Dan had asked about his leftover Christmas chocolates that disappeared from under our Christmas tree. I figured he ate them but forgot that he did. He insisted he didn't eat them. Until the Ghirardelli chocolates disappeared I lived happily in a state of denial. Now the truth had come out, we did indeed have a mouse roaming our house and eating our chocolates. I suppose the calories would be been on it than us but this is Ghirardelli chocolates we're talking about here!

We called the exterminator and he put a couple traps down and some poison in our attic. He was confident we'd capture the critter. Well, it is pretty slick, one of the traps has been without bait and set for a couple months now since the mouse ate the bait and didn't set off the trap.

Not too long ago I moved a sticky spider trap from our laundry room and noticed a ball of fur in it. I was uncertain how we'd managed to get that much dryer lint in it so I looked closer and discovered claws and teeth. Not sure how long it had been there but our spider trap also successfully captured a mouse!

We've seen no evidence of rodents for some time now and the poison is gone from the attic so hopefully we're in the clear. I suppose only time will tell.

As a Follow-Up

A follow up to our end of 2014 post, when we received notice that our new tv was ready for pick up, it was all we could do to contain ourselves before we headed out to get it. Dan was concerned about getting it home from the store, however, it fit perfectly in the back seat of our car:

It didn't take us long to get it all set up! We have both enjoyed this new toy!!!

Sid's Wedding Stuff

Earlier in the year we received a phone call from Sid letting us know that he'd found the girl he wanted to marry, but to not tell anyone yet. For several weeks we discussed wedding plans, made arrangements to be off work, and waited to be able to spread the news!!!

With this information, our time out west changed from a 10-14 days to all three weeks plus extra days to be in attendance for the wedding festivities.

The festivities included Liz receiving her endowment in the Logan Temple,

a Horrocks Family Wedding Shower,

an open house in Pocatello,

a wedding reception in Salt Lake,

 and the wedding itself, in the Salt Lake Temple.

For the Idaho Open House, Sid and Liz had a soft serve ice cream machine. Our job was to bring toppings. Off to Chocolate World to shop for all that might be needed for a sundae. We distributed the toppings, syrups, and sprinkles between our checked and carry-on luggage. Luckily all arrived in tact.

Yes, there was a Resse's theme. When it's the bride and groom's favorite, many must be purchased.

A very full few days but worth every minute to celebrate these two lovebirds.

Non-Wedding Summer Fun

Between all the wedding festivities, we managed to fit in some other vacation-type things; meeting Liz, visiting our families, Yellowstone, and Bryce Canyon.

Dinner with the kids. Jake's a Party Pooper sometimes.

Chipper LOVES Dan. Too bad the feeling isn't mutual.

When visiting from out of town, it's always a good idea to check the Temple schedule before showing up.

When we headed to Cedar, we helped Deb with her children which included a stop in Scipio to visit a petting zoo:

Bryce was beautiful. It was fun to reacquaint Dan with the canyon I heard so much about growing up.

While in Cedar we enjoyed an evening with The Bard at the Utah Shakespeare Festival.

The Green Show

Before the Performance of "The Comedy of Errors"

We joined Mom and Dad at the Cedar City Cemetery. I got to see my grandmother's new headstone that had been completed earlier in the year.

We took some of my nieces for an outing at Classic Skating. I roller-skated too, what was I thinking?!

Our time in Yellowstone was quick but great to be back in an area that played such a big part of our courtship. We saw a couple shows at the Playmill (Les Miserables and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat), we went on a hike, drove through the North entrance of Yellowstone, and visited Old Faithful at night. 

With all we did, planned and unplanned, it was tough to return to our "normal lives."

Winding up the School Year

After Spring Break ended it was back to work for us. We picked up our assignments and kept rotating around campus. We did our best to make the most of the warmer temperatures and longer amounts of sunshine.

May and June finished up with some random things. We made another trek into Harrisburg for the National Step Competition. Some of the Houses we joined last year were here again. We took a home who hadn't been before. It was another adventure. If we go again, we need to bring sack meals. It's a long night and the performances just get better as the night goes on. We left early since the girls we were with didn't believe us when we said it would be long & they needed to eat a big meal before we left at 3:00.

When we returned from the competition the power was out all over town. Our badges didn't let us into the student home; thank goodness for security having master keys that let us in. We gathered flashlights and made the best of the time playing games, visiting, and laughing together until Dan and I finally sent the girls to bed.

Dan's Birthday was approaching so we opted to celebrate a little early on our time off. We were going to head to Texas Roadhouse when Dan decided he would rather somewhere else for his birthday dinner:

He opened his gifts a couple days apart, before we went back to work (on his birthday) and a few days after when the final gifts arrived from an on-line order.

This year we had several girls performing in the Spring Dance Recital so we made sure to go support them. They had been working all year for this concert and they did well! We recognized several faces on the stage and in the crowd; always a bonus to our time at a campus activity.

A couple days after that it was "National Doughnut Day." Dan took some of the boys to the outlet mall and then to Dunkin' Doughnuts for a true celebration. I made sure not to miss out on the fun when I was out and about myself.

Our Reward for Sacrificing

All of my student loans are paid off! It's been a tough journey full of sacrifices and big extra payments resulting in my loans all paid off in 5½ years. We still have a couple of Dan's to finish, however, his will be all finished by the end of June 2014. Afterwards the trick will be to NOT spend every dime we've put towards debt and save, Save, SAVE as much as possible of that "extra" income.

To celebrate the milestone of my debts being finished we decided to look for a new couch. We asked for recommendations, having no idea where to begin the shopping process. The first store we went to had many to choose from and we found three that were our favorites:

None of them we were both 100% sold on; they were too formal, too casual, or too retro for what we wanted. So off to a couple more stores we went.

Finally we had some time between Conference Sessions and decided to try one or two more stores. We entered one and looked through several options not very excited about much of what we saw; the price and/or style. Finally we found one we both agreed upon! The price was reasonable enough that we were able to purchase the ottoman too.

Because we purchased the couch exactly how it appeared on the floor (in fact it is the one from the sales floor) it was delivered about a week after we purchased it. The morning it arrived I raced home from work to see our new furniture in it's proper place. I must say, we picked well!

Since the couch is a totally different color than what we had before, that means that purchases need to be made so that more of the living room items match the different color scheme. I'm trying to be patient but am anxious to finish the search for additional seating options and to complete our new living room decor.

Fall Colors, Our Car Brutally Attacked, A Funfilled Return Home

The fall colors in our area were B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L. It was so wonderful to drive around and see the leaves change; they even seemed to last late into the season which added to the enjoyment. I took several snapshots around town to try and capture the beauty of the season.

The colors weren't just in our area either. We took a trip to the Washington DC Temple and captured colorful pictures there as well:

Earlier in the summer I noticed bird doo doo on the doors and scratches on our outside rear-view mirrors and windows. We couldn't figure it out for the longest time. One day I was upstairs and happened to look out and see a male cardinal flitting about on edge of our window attacking the competition he saw in the rear-view mirror! It was such a funny site. As time went on we caught the cardinal on the car but as I pulled out my camera, it would fly away. Finally my patience paid off and I was able to catch the bird in action by still shot and video:

We'd even try putting our car in slightly different places and it still came and attacked. We even saw it on our neighbor's vehicles a time or two. Now we have to try and figure out a way to keep the bird from breaking it's beak and our window or mirror next year. But at least we have proof for the insurance company, if the need arises.

As Thanksgiving drew closer we looked forward to having the whole break off. Since it was time for another Horrocks Thanksgiving, we purchased tickets and flew home for a visit. We spent a couple days with my sister, Lynette, and her family. One of the days the girls kept themselves busy with our camera and our iPad taking pictures of each other. As a result I have lots, I mean LOTS, of pictures similar to these:

Then there are the goofy ones we took and they took, playing around with Photo Booth on the iPad; LOTS of those as well:

While there we met a new niece, had a violin & dance performances, and saw a cutie run pose for her modeling shoot,

 

After our time with them, which included a quick trip up from the southern part of the state by my parents and lunch with my Grandma B, we headed up to Amanda & Jake's for a couple days. Sid came down for our time there and we spent our time purchasing gifts, opening a few, visiting, "befriending" Amanda & Jake's dog Chipper, helping Amanda decorate for Christmas, and a little traditional Mario Kart competition:

Chipper loved Dan, as you can see, the feeling wasn't mutual.

Ideas and help Sid and I gave Amanda for this wall.

 

Our time with Amanda & Jake quickly came to a close. Dan, Sid, & I headed up to Pocatello for Thanksgiving with Dan's siblings and their families. Dan joined Sid for part of the trip and they picked up "tarts" along the way. Then we met about half way and I joined Sid in his car and Dan finished driving our rental to Pocatello. As I was in the car alone, I had stopped for a Dr. Pepper and decided to open it as I drove; that wasn't a very good idea. I managed to spill it, all over, the rental car:

After having the same challenge driving to Girl's Camp a couple years ago you would think I learned my lesson, but no, I had to do it again and do it worse!

 

All of Dan's siblings & siblings-in-law were in attendance for Thanksgiving, as were the nieces and nephews not on missions, in Hawaii, or with in-laws. It was great to be together. There were some fun memories made playing a game of football Thanksgiving day, capturing an Idaho sunrise, playing games, visiting, watching movies, planning black Friday shopping, puzzle putting together, and eating, eating, and eating some more. So good to be together again!

 

 

 

 

So, Dan & Sid's "tarts..." The morning we left for Pocatello we all had breakfast together. As we were visiting about our food assignment, desserts, Jake suggested that we should take pies from McDonald's. The more Dan & Sid thought about it, the more they liked the idea. So as they drove up from Ogden, they stopped at 2-3 McDonald's along the way to purchase 22 of their pies (so long as they were ok with the price). In the mean time, I was at Costco purchasing REAL desserts.

 

Along with the presentation was the desire to keep talking up these fabulous "tarts" they were going to make. With a few minutes to themselves, they quickly opened all the boxes and got the set out on a cookie sheet to reheat them. Good thing the Horrocks are known for humor, everyone got a good laugh at their contribution to the Thanksgiving dessert choices. What a couple of wingnuts!

 

 

Quick as the trip was it was great to see so many loved ones. We loved our time together and look forward to the next gathering!
