Would You Care To Dance?

Our Stake holds an adults Valentine's Dance the Friday before Valentines. Last year was an 80's theme. I visited a thrift store and found a couple things that would work well then added the right accessories...Wouldn't you like say we like look like totally gnarly?

I won't tell you exactly what was purchased at the thrift store and what we already had.

So this year there wasn't a theme, just come in Sunday dress. With Dan's new assignment to the High Council he is over activities and music. Due to a family emergency the Stake Activities Chair was unable to put things together. When Dan told me I asked that I not have to do much if anything since I had another BIG event come up at work just a day or two earlier, was fighting a cold, knew I'd be having a surgical procedure the week before, and I was going out of town a few days after the dance. Needless to say adding "our" being in charge of the dance was extremely overwhelming.

WELL...guess who ended up doing the decorating and being in charge of the dance????  Thankfully some very simple ideas for decorations came quickly and refreshments we kept very simple. Here's what we did to decorate:




And it's not Valentine's without cookies, candies, and brownies all appropriately decorated in pink and red:

As I was walking through the hall I accidentally hit the shutter button and this was the picture that was taken:

Whoops! At least I got a good laugh out of it.

Luckily we had already received the names of several couples who could help and they were FABULOUS! One couple had other plans and couldn't stay for the dance but they set up and then returned to help with the clean up....their getting a vote into heaven from me!

Despite everything else on my plate the dance went well and everyone there seemed to be enjoying themselves. Whew! Now onto the next thing...

Guess the quiet New Year's should have hinted that it would be a quiet January too. We've had a  roller-coaster of emotions this month and as such I'm looking forward to a calmer, quieter next few months. However, with our lease expiring in February and trying to figure out where to move, it might be a little while before things quiet down.

On a positive note, this area has short winters and long Spring/Summer/Fall seasons. It's beginning to feel a lot like Spring already and the farmers are beginning to plant. Still odd to me but very encouraging despite the strangeness. Now if only the multiple days of fog will end and the sun return...

A Quiet Welcome

It's been awhile only because it's been very quiet here. We've had cold and some more snow which had me bundling up and staying inside often. Christmas is still up, despite Dan's not-so-subtle hints for me to take it down, but I think I'll be doing the tear down this weekend but we'll see.

Our New Year's Eve was enjoyable. We had a couple come over for games. We played Yahtzee, Phase 10, and Uno with all the scores being kept together. Then 1 die was rolled to determine who won. A 3 moved all the scores to the right. A 1 moved them to the left. The 2 swapped the highest with the lowest, etc. The 6 said 1 more roll of the die to determine the winner. Odd it was the highest score, even the lowest. Leave it to Dan to not just play a game the way the instructions say.

Since Dan had worked a full day on New Year's Eve and Tim (the hubby who came to over) had to work at 5:00 am on New Year's Day Tim and Elayna headed home around 10. We crawled into bed shortly after and Dan fell right to sleep. I was reading and at midnight leaned over and kissed Dan for the New Year then turned out the light. Unfortunately the neighbors didn't realize we were wanting to sleep. Some were outside yelling and using noisemakers others were shooting off fireworks. Luckily it didn't last very late and I was soon able to fall asleep.

Around 2:45 am we were startled by a text message on Dan's phone. It was Amanda letting us know about the New Year's celebrations going on in Hawaii. She'd left earlier that day for Hawaii to present at a conference there. Tough work trip, I'd say. Being the smart woman she is she left the weekend before the conference and came home the weekend after it ended. Since she was only presenting, she was able to play most of the time she was there. What a rough life she leads. ;)

So a quiet New Year's for us but we welcome 2011 just the same.
